No matter how sweet the sentiment of antique samplers, they do have a dark and limiting history for the girls that stitched them even in era of the Industrial Revolution when most were forced into cities to work the factories, some were able to gain new status and wealth but most girl's lives whether rich or poor were still controlled by others.
